I’m a Richmond, Virginia–based freelance writer and copyeditor with nearly 20 years of experience crafting persuasive copy and telling authentic, compelling stories that connect with people and drive results. Currently, I’m the content writer and in-house blogger for Laurelbox, a boutique female-owned small business that specializes in curated sympathy and loss gifts. Having unexpectedly lost our second son at full term, I am comfortable writing about grief in all its forms. For almost 10 years I worked in the competitive and exciting field of national cable news based in Washington DC. From booking esteemed journalists and world leaders to copyediting senior reporters’ scripts, I loved the task of finding exciting ways to tell stories that would resonate with the millions of viewers who watched each night.
I stepped away from the nonstop news cycle after we moved to Richmond, Virginia with our young family. Since then I’ve had various jobs that included newsletter writing, annual reports, press releases, email campaigns, ghost writing, digital marketing, copyediting, and public relations. I’ve been on the receiving end of pitches so I have a deep understanding of what “sells” and how to grab people’s attention.

I also have a passion for military veterans, having campaigned for my husband’s Purple Heart (awarded in 2024) and expanded benefits for disabled veterans (passed in 2018). I love international travel and wrote a piece on how European airports are more kid-friendly than their American counterparts. I have other published articles ranging from hard news to opinion pieces related to parenting. I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida School of Journalism in 2006.

To summarize, I’m a dang good writer (clearly humble too…) who cares about the final draft of whatever written piece I’m submitting. Whether I’m writing for a national audience or a company’s valued customer list, I want to inspire people and make them laugh, cry and everything in between. Thanks for stopping by!

A little bit about me

Laurel Box

Ghost writer

No matter your politics, the news channel and website is a dominant force in media. I’ve written both opinion pieces for them and straight news articles.

Space Regulation

After years of research tracking down medical records, military personnel and champions for our cause, my husband was finally awarded a Purple Heart in 2024 for injuries sustained in Baghdad in 2006. We navigated three denials and I would love to help other veteran families maneuver through the application process.

Purple HEart Work

I lobbied lawmakers in both parties to adjust the SPACE A travel regulations to include 100% disabled veterans and their dependents, which ultimately passed in 2018.

Purple HEart Work

In the last few years, I’ve pushed a SPACE-A regulation change through Congress, helped multiple veterans file for benefits and successfully fought for my husband’s Purple Heart award through multiple appeals.

qatar

24 hours, three flights and a short golf cart ride brought us to our overwater bungalow that was a bucket list destination. I can honestly say I’ve never felt sand that soft and seen water that clear!

Maldives

We spent a few days in this unassuming gem of a destination and loved it. From off-roading in the desert to uber-luxury (but affordable!) accommodations, we can’t wait to return with our kids to experience more of what Doha has to offer. Also, I’ve got a great falcon story if you’re interested.

Maldives

Traveling is my love language. 31 countries later, I love exploring new places with kids (we took a 3-month old to Europe!) and without (hello, overwater bungalow in the Maldives.) I love sharing tips, itineraries and hilarious stories like that one time I stepped on a sea urchin in Croatia (0/10 would not recommend.)

World Traveler

As a mother to three, I fully acknowledge parenting is a daily, if not hourly, challenge. I’ve written about how airports in Europe are more kid-friendly than here in America. I’ve shared my frustration with the toddler addiction that is Cocomelon. Whether it’s a serious subject or fits into the more light-hearted category, I want other parents to know there’s humor in the absurd and hope in the tantrums.

It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. I’ve walked through losing a child at full term, miscarriage, secondary infertility, IVF and the countless joys and challenges that come with raising children. I’m no expert but I love sharing what I’ve learned along the way.
